Poetry Lives in the Heart Throbs of Youth —— 2017 Beijing International Schools Poetry Contest Awards Ceremony was held in the THIS library in the morning on April 29th. It was the first day of May Day Holiday. Teachers, students and parents from Dulwich College Beijing, Beijing City International School, International School of Beijing, Tsinghua University High School International, Beanstalk International Bilingual School and Tsinghua International School attended this ceremony instead of taking a trip on such a sunny day, showing their passion for poetry.

Yusheng Liang said “poetry lives in the heart throbs of youth”; Chouyu Zheng said “poetry is a literature form that belongs to the youth”; Ze Yang said “poets begin to sing in the joy of youth”. Students begin to know themselves, understand others and make sense of the world when they are young. The seeds of poetry are nurtured by their emotions deep in their hearts, growing with their physical growth. Therefore, youth may be the best period to learn to read and write poetry from the perspective of psychology. The Chinese department at Tsinghua International School
Mrs. Wenping Li, the Vice Principal of THIS, and Ms. Maxine Klimasara, the academic principal of THIS, also attended this ceremony. Both of them made a speech after teachers, students, parents and poets entered and were seated. Ms. Klimasara emphasized that the educational philosophy of THIS is to combine Chinese and Western cultures. She also introduced the Chinese program of THIS and hoped that everyone could enjoy the ceremony. After Mrs. Li spoke highly of this event, she recalled the beautiful time that she read and wrote poetry when she was young. Mrs. Li said that, in those days, she had a special hobby that she made a copy of all her favorite poems. She said that the poems she read and copied were still deep in her heart. Then, she recited a poem off the top of her head, which was wroten by Murong Xi and called ‘a Blooming Tree’ — “May Buddha let us meet in my most beautiful hours……”. One of the most surprising and impressing moments of this ceremony was that Mrs. Zhaoxia Li, a Chinese teacher from Dulwich College Beijing, recited this poem with Mrs. Wenping Li together. The beautiful and touching poem and their affectionate recitation made everyone hold their breath and listen with heart. The audience burst into thunderous applause when Mrs. Wenping Li and Mrs. Zhaoxia Li finished reciting. Such an unanticipated beginning showed us the miraculous echoes between two souls with high passion for poetry. In this ceremony, thanks to poetry, we met each other, enjoyed the most beautiful thoughts and feelings of youth in the most beautiful April day; luckily, there was no need to “pray it for five hundred years” 同学那首带着美好期许的诗:“带着一盏/自己会走路的灯/一路向前”。

It is an honor that poets Mr Lei Feng and Mr Shading attended the ceremony. They talked about the characteristics of the poems created by students in general, and, then, analyzed some particular poems respectively. They discussed students’ thoughts and feelings of poetry and made comments on the relationship between youth and poetry. Both Mr Lei Feng and Mr Shading pointed out that it had been exactly 100 years since Shi Hu published his new poetry on the journal ‘New Youth’, and it is of significance to hold this ceremony in 2017. Then, two poets answered questions asked by students, parents and teachers, and Mr Feng and Mr Shading also recited poems. After Mr Feng read a poem in his resonant voice, all of the students, parents and teachers read the poem wrote by Isabelle Yu (a student at THIS) which expressed her best wishes, “along with a lamp / walking on its own / all the way forward” ; which may be another impressive moment of this ceremony. Exactly, poetry can be one of the lamps which can walk by themselves, and we hope that this lamp (i.e. poetry) can always be with you to illuminate the dark road ahead.
Then, there was a tea break which provided opportunities for attendees to communicate with each other. While enjoying the food, students, parents and teachers continued to share their thoughts of poetry, read and bought the collection of poems and bookmarks in memory of this poetry contest. All the books were sold out quickly and some parents still wanted to order more copies. After the tea break, several students in Grade 12 at THIS showed the students, parents and teachers from other schools around on Tsinghua campus. We believed that they might come up with more poems during their walk in such a beautiful spring day.
This ceremony finished successfully, which indicated a new start instead of an end, because “poetry lives in the heart throbs of youth” (Yusheng Liang). Every teenager is like a darling baby in the kingdom of poetry. Their hearts will be moistened until clouds storing enough rainwater for them. We hope that the ceremony held in this spring day can motivate the youth to express their deep hearted thoughts and feelings and eventually find realms for their poetic souls. We also hope that readers can find their own roses and foxes from this collection of poetry, and understand that their souls will stay young forever if their thoughts and feelings remains poetry-like (i.e. beautiful and romantic).
It should be noted that, for students in Chinese Author Circle at THIS, this ceremony is not only about sharing their passion for poetry. The success of this poetry contest may be mostly attributed to these students. It is these students that formulate the ideas of this contest and put these ideas into practices. They spread this contest in the WeChat Official Account of Chinese Author Circle which was also created by themselves, collected poems from contestants, edited the book, designed the cover sheet and the layout of it, designed award certificates, bookmarks and posters, decorated the venue, which all showed their creativity and hard work. We also appreciated the help we received from students in the Comic and Illustration Club at THIS. They created 94 illustration for each poem in the book, making the meaning of the poems visible. It is believed that this event can not only cultivate students’ passion for poetry, but also improve their abilities of organizing, communicating, coordinating, cooperating, exploring and creating.
